Chiropractic is an evidence-informed, non-invasive, hands-on health care discipline that focuses on the nervous system, spine and musculoskeletal system. Chiropractors practice primarily using their hands, providing diagnosis, treatment and preventive care for disorders related to the spine, nervous system and joints of the musculoskeletal system. After taking a history, performing an examination and establishing a diagnosis, your chiropractor will develop and recommend a comprehensive treatment/management plan that you can carry out with them. Your chiropractor may recommend therapeutic exercise and other supportive, non-invasive therapies.

The foundation of chiropractic care is the spinal adjustment, which can comprise a variety of adjustment techniques. Specific training in spinal adjusting ensures that your chiropractor is highly-skilled in providing precise adjustments to the vertebrae of the spine, correcting joint motion to restore proper movement and improve function.

For many conditions, such as low back pain, chiropractic care is the primary method of treatment. When a multi-disciplinary approach is advised, your chiropractor will coordinate care with other health care professionals such as a registered massage therapist, physiotherapist or acupuncturist. Where other conditions exist, chiropractic care may complement or support medical or other treatment. Chiropractic care may also be used to provide symptomatic relief for patients with chronic conditions.

Massage therapy consists primarily of hands-on treatment of the soft tissues of the body. Your registered massage therapist (RMT) will specifically address the muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and joints for the purpose of optimizing your health.  Massage techniques can vary from Swedish to Thai, from deep tissue or trigger point therapy to fascia release therapy. Your massage therapist will use their knowledge of anatomy and physiology to combine the techniques best suited for your body and your desired goals for your therapy session.

Massage therapy has a therapeutic effect on the body and optimizes health. Physical dysfunction and pain and the effects of stress can be relieved or prevented through massage therapy. Physical function can be developed, improved and maintained with ongoing care.

Various specialized movements of the hands, over the skin or clothes, make up the massage therapy treatment. Your registered massage therapist will work with your level of pain tolerance during each session, and your treatment can be modified or stopped at any time should the treatment become uncomfortable. Your satisfaction with the session and its outcomes are both priorities for your therapist.  Massage therapy is not covered by OHIP, but many private insurance companies cover treatment from a registered massage therapist as part of their extended healthcare benefits plans.

Acupuncture is a technique in which practitioners stimulate specific points on the body—most often by inserting thin needles through the skin. It is one of the practices used in traditional Chinese medicine. Utilizing traditional Chinese medicine principles of health and illness, your acupuncturist will assess you using a holistic approach to body health, function and dysfunction.

Several studies suggest that acupuncture may help ease types of musculoskeletal pain that are often chronic such as low-back pain, neck pain, and osteoarthritis/knee pain. Acupuncture may also help reduce the intensity, duration, and frequency of tension headaches as well as prevent migraine headaches. Therefore, acupuncture is a safe, non-invasive, non-surgical, drug-free option for people with chronic pain to consider.  The effects of acupuncture on the brain and body and how best to measure them are only beginning to be understood.

Relatively few complications from using acupuncture needles or related techniques have been reported. Still, complications have resulted from use of nonsterile needles and improper delivery of treatments. By choosing a registered acupuncturist for your treatment, you can be assured that your practitioner is being held to a higher standard by their regulatory body, and are employing safe needling practices, such as the use of pre-sterilized, disposable needles, proper disposal of used needles in medical sharps containers, protective gloves and sanitization and sterilization practices including rubbing alcohol as needed and appropriate.
